"BitDefender Security for File Servers Receives VB100% Certification from Virus Bulletin."
Excellent scores achieved in October’s 2009 Microsoft Server 2008 test
BUCHAREST, Romania – October 14, 2009 – BitDefender® today announced that BitDefender Security for File Servers was awarded VB100% certification from Virus Bulletin for its ability to detect 100% of viruses on the WildList with no false positives. The outstanding level of malicious program detection without any false positives has brought BitDefender Security for File Servers another well-earned VB100 award which further proves the depth and accuracy of our antivirus technology, while at the same time ensuring customer peace of mind. The October 2009 Virus Bulletin comparative review assessed products from multiple security vendors specifically for the Microsoft Server 2008 platform.
Virus Bulletin provides PC users with a regular source of intelligence about computer viruses, in addition to the prevention, detection, and the removal of malicious software following an attack. Virus Bulletin offers impartial advice on the many aspects of antivirus security to their readers, while conducting independent comparative testing of the market leading anti-virus technology and solutions. The testing methodology includes virus, spyware and rootkit detection rates, as well as the scanning speed of files sets that are known to be clean.
In order to display the VB100 logo, an antivirus product must have demonstrated to meet or exceed Virus Bulletin’s stringent testing standards in the product’s default state, including;
The detection of all "in the wild" viruses currently spreading throughout the world’s diverse user population
- Maintains detection rates using both on-demand and on-access scanning
- Generates no “false positives” when scanning a set of clean files
"BitDefender is dedicated to providing clients with superior protection from viruses, spyware and rootkits, while lowering the burden of administrating a server software solution," said Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender's chief technology officer. "Receiving VB100% certification from Virus Bulletin for BitDefender Security for File Servers further proves our dedication to fulfilling that promise."
BitDefender Security for File Servers is a data security solution specially dedicated to Windows- based servers. Easy to install, configure and manage, BitDefender offers world-class protection from viruses, spyware and root kits without significantly impacting the performance of the server.

"This protection suite offers low priced protection for the PC gamer searching for less negative impact on their gaming experience. BitDefender GameSafe claims to keep up the protection while leaving a small footprint on the computers resources. I am a true believer in giving a company some press, especially when they are true believers in the product. The BitDefender GameSafe representative who contacted us was certainly enthusiastic about the product. So we took the program suite on blast of a test drive. A Marathon of gaming and downloads and scans, updates and even tested customer service out to see the full picture of this product.
GameSafe does in fact do what it says it does. It seems to have actually combined speed and security in one package."

BitDefender E-Threats Landscape Report Spotlights Trojans as Dominate Security Menace in 2008
Anti-virus leader predicts stealth and automation will be major concerns in 2009
BUCHAREST, Romania – January 28, 2009 – More than 80 percent of malware distributed worldwide in 2008 consisted of Trojans according to the E-Threats Landscape Report, a comprehensive security threat study published by BitDefender® Lab, an award-winning provider of antivirus software and data security solutions. This E-Threats Landscape Report, the second in a series of security reports, provides a comprehensive overview of the security threats landscape over the last six months, from July through December 2008, and takes a look at what lies ahead in 2009.
BitDefender's security experts analyzed and examined the menaces of the second half of 2008, focusing on software vulnerabilities and exploits, different types of malware, as well as countermeasures, cyber crime prevention and law enforcement. They found that internet users had to cope with approximately 2,000 new and mutated viruses per day, nearly 50,000 phishing attempts per month and more than 1,000,000 hijacked computers that spread bots, rootkits, Trojans and other malware in 2008.
Highlights from BitDefender's E-Threats Landscape Report for the second half of 2008 include:
· Web-based e-threats level increased 460 percent
· JavaScript exploitations via SQL injection tripled in volume
· 75 percent of Trojans included complex updating mechanisms, stealth data download and upload features, as well as spyware and rootkit capabilities
· The most common headlines used to spread e-threats included the alleged U.S. invasion of Iran, the 29th Olympic Games and the U.S. Presidential Election
· Plain text comprised 80 percent of e-mail spam, while image spam dropped to only 1.5 percent
· The number of spam e-mails containing infected attachments or linking pages prompting users to download malicious programs increased 400 percent
· The countries most affected by e-threats included France, China, United States, Germany and Spain
· Nearly 70 percent of phishing attempts surrounded the global financial crisis
· New spam techniques mimicking newsletters and alerts from news corporations such as CNN, CBS and ABC were introduced
· Spammers concentrated their attention on receipt messages, to increase spam efficiency
“The purpose of BitDefender's E-Threats Landscape Reports are to provide consistent and useful information to consumers about the malware industry," said Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender's chief technology officer. “Not only does BitDefender want to educate consumers about what is currently happening in the malware industry, but we also want to provide consumers with guidance about what to expect and how to protect against e-threats in the upcoming year. For example, nearly 45 percent of the e-threats in the wild in 2008 were distributed via e-mail. With this in mind, consumers should make securing e-mail communication a priority in 2009."
E-Threat predictions for 2009 from BitDefender's E-Threats Landscape Report include:
· Malware production will continue to exploit the same Web-based capabilities of Trojans, spyware and rootkits
· Existing e-threat families will suffer significant upgrades and mutations in terms of stealth and automation of spreading mechanisms
· An increase in the exploitation of application vulnerabilities, similar to the latest password stealing application vulnerability (Trojan.PWS.ChromeInject.A) BitDefender researchers identified in early December, is expected to increase
· Targeted attacks on Web 2.0 applications, namely social networking sites, is expected to increase.
· Smart phones and other intelligent high-end devices with permanent Internet access will be targeted by new generations of mobile malware

BitDefender Uncovers Fraudulent Scheme Targeting JPMorgan Chase & Co™ Customers
New phishing raid attempts to deceive e-banking users into revealing their sensitive financial data.
BUCHAREST, Romania – November 24, 2008 – BitDefender® researchers detected a new significant wave of e-mail spam purporting to verify and reinforce the "new security measures" from Chase™ Online Banking Team.
The online form, which claims to be the financial institution's portal, spoofs several visual identification elements, such as the logo and general layout, but its domain appears to be registered in Turkey (.tk).
When users confirm via a PHP script, phishers are able to steal the data. The retrieved information could be employed to empty bank accounts, but also for subsequent spamming, phishing or vishing purposes.
"In terms of security, the repercussions of the critical economic context and unprecedented changes into the financial realm translated into highly increased spamming and phishing activities," said Vlad Vâlceanu, Head of BitDefender Antispam Research. "For e-criminals, the general concern and panic are an ideal opportunity to gain access to sensitive information. Now more than ever, users should be extremely cautious when handling their financial and personal data throughout the Internet."

Malware Spreading Swoop Avails of US Air Operators Names
Bucharest – September 17th - Following this summer JetBlue Airways' bogus e-Ticketing bombardment, malware creators launched a new Trojan offensive via phony messages featuring abusive use of major US air traffic operators' identities.
The last two weeks, inboxes around the world swamped in the newest muddy spam campaign purporting to deliver e-Tickets and invoices for the alleged customers of a so-called "Buy Airplane Ticket Online" service. You guessed - behind the apparently harmless zip archives is a brand new and improved cargo of malware.

With tropical destinations almost out of the picture, but school and work days approaching at the supersonic speed, probably the same "bad guys" behind the summer spam wave edition thought to give it another try. Same template, another mass-mailing - but with different "borrowed" flyers and some extra mischievous toppings.

Instead of hot July's JetBlue Airways spoofed identity, autumn brought in the spotlight the other US air companies Delta Air Lines, Virgin America, United Airlines, Continental Airlines, but also Southwest Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Midwest Airlines, as well as other operators including cardinal points within their names. Also beware of the following counterfeit messages sent on behalf of operators with a more exotic resonance: Sun Country Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, AirTran Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines.
As for the malware flavors, we have our "good" old buddies Trojan.Spy.Zbot.KJ and Trojan.Spy.Wsnpoem.HA – you probably remember when we have acquainted you with them during the forged UPS® and FedEx® e-mails -, but also, the "challenger" Trojan.Injector.CH.
Both old and new comers have rootkit components that help them to install and hide themselves on the compromised machine either in the Windows or Program Files directory. They inject code in several processes and add exceptions to the Microsoft® Windows® Firewall, providing backdoor and server capabilities. They all send sensitive information and listen on several ports for possible commands from the remote attacker. The Trojans also attempt to connect and download files from servers with domain names apparently registered in the Russian Federation.
"Users should be aware that without the appropriate security solution the integrity of their systems is at an extremely high risk. The Trojans this new malware distribution campaign delivers and the high rate of infections prove once again not just the cybercriminals ingenuity, but also the lack of interest the users show in terms of systems' defense and sensitive data protection." said Sorin Dudea, Head of BitDefender® Antimalware Research.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – September 3, 2008 – BitDefender Internet Security 2008 was ranked first among software security suites by a leading consumer magazine in a report comparing security software that appeared in the publication's September issue. The rankings – determined after rigorous testing conducted by the publication and an independent testing company – were based upon each product's ability to properly detect e-threats as well as overall performance and features.
BitDefender Internet Security 2008 is designed for users who want complete protection from malware and other common Internet Security threats. Internet Security includes all of the benefits of Antivirus 2008, as well as:

- Web time limiter – which allows or blocks access to the web during specified time periods
- Application control – which allows users to limit access to specified applications
This award is the latest in a series of industry honors for BitDefender, an award-winning provider of antivirus software and data security solutions. The company placed number one in the same study in 2006 and received high marks from other publications, such as PC Magazine and PC World, as well as organizations such as AVTest.org.
"Our number 1 ranking in this study two out of the last three years underscores BitDefender's commitment to providing the best possible software security solution," said Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender's chief technology officer. "At BitDefender, we are continually expanding the capability of our software. We are dedicated to providing consumers with the most easy to use, up-to-date and efficient Internet security protection available."
BitDefender recently launched BitDefender Total Security 2009, including Internet Security 2009 and Antivirus 2009. Built on the same technology as Internet Security 2008, Internet Security 2009 offers new features and capabilities to keep Internet-connected families safe, without slowing down PCs. It locks out viruses, hackers & spam, while providing parental control and firewall protection.
